A firewall acts as a shield between your computer and the internet. It blocks unwanted access while allowing trusted connections.

Windows Firewall is built into the system and is usually turned on by default — but it’s always a good idea to double-check.

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Firewall & Network Protection. You’ll see three types of networks — Domain, Private, and Public. Each one can have different firewall settings.

For most users, make sure all three say “Firewall is on.” If you use public Wi-Fi often (like in cafes or airports), having your Public network firewall on is especially important.

You can also allow specific apps through the firewall if needed — for example, remote desktop tools or file-sharing software. Just click “Allow an app through firewall” and carefully select what’s safe.

Once set up, you won’t need to worry — Windows Firewall silently protects your connection every time you go online.
